What is SPORECOIN?
SPORECOIN is a memecoin. That is, it is a cryptocurrency that exists for no other reason than to gain or lose value according to traders’ activities. But unlike other memecoins, like DOGECOIN or TRUMPCOIN, where an investment means nothing but to support a grift, investment in SPORECOIN would support actual research on Fungi.
Why?
Public research dollars for my basic research on fungal diversity and evolution are scarce, and becoming scarcer by the year. I created this as a potential alternative way to raise funds to support my research. Sure, I could start a GoFundMe or change my research to align with federal funding priorities like AI (which would be a huge waste of my specialist expertise, as demonstrated here with the creation of SPORECOIN), but I fantasized about the potential financial benefit to individuals buying $SPORE that could attract a larger base of people to invest in basic mycology research who are not already predisposed to loving Fungi.
If you buy $SPORE, it increases its value. The more people that buy it, the more its value increases, so your individual investment can potentially turn a profit (or you could lost it entirely). But an increase in value of $SPORE will also generate investment that I can liquidate to fund my research (and I literally have nothing to lose other than the small amount of personal money I used to kickstart the coin). 100% of that value will fund my research, from supporting lab technicians to funding fieldwork close to home and in far flung places to generating genomes, ALL of which benefits humanity as a whole.
